Multi-Use Complex

Class: Architectural Design Studio II
Professor: Saad Sadig
Year: Spring 2014

Site Plan

The project was to design a mixed use complex building on the south end of the city of Santa Maria's Town Center West it is to be composed of retail, health and beauty shops as well as a number of offices. It was designed as a fairly large building with entrances that welcome the public on the east side of the building and on the south west side, thus allowing foot traffic to flow through the building instead of around it. In the center there is a courtyard that provides areas for rest with trees used for natural shading. There are two large spaces for large chain retail stores, however many of the spaces are smaller giving the opportunity for local business's to have a unique shop.

Design Layers

When designing the building it was important to incorporate a building that would not be too grand in size. The way the building is composed is with only part of it being two stories high, thus creating a building that will fit well around the existing buildings. The multi use complex has a change in slope where there is a change in level and again down to a slightly lower level on the side the offices are positioned. This is done so to reduce the height of the offices with smaller spaces.
